Pound surges above $1.35 on reports of progress in Brexit talks

The pound jumped against the U.S. dollar and the euro Monday following reports of progress in talks over the U.K.'s exit from the European Union, or Brexit. Irish news agency RTE reported that the U.K. will agree to regulatory alignment on EU rules for its single market and customs union on the island of Ireland after Brexit. There have been concerns that Brexit would result in a hard border between the Republic of Ireland, which is a part of the EU, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the U.K. There were also reports that the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, has said a breakthrough in talks appears more likely. The pound hit an intraday high of $1.3525, while sterling was up about 0.7% against the euro at €1.1409. Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move.
