Nokia's stock rallies on heavy volume after analyst upgrade

The U.S.-listed shares of Nokia Corp. rallied 1.7% in active premarket trade Friday, on the back of an earnings-inspired 12% surge the previous session, after MKM Partners upgraded the Finland-based telecommunications giant, citing an upbeat 5G outlook. Volume was about 1.28 million shares, enough to make the stock the second-most actively traded ahead of the open, behind Apple Inc.'s stock's 1.31 million shares. MKM analyst Michael Genovese raised his rating to buy, after years of being at neutral, and boosted his stock price target to $7.50 from $5.50. "We have an improving view of the company's technology, product and customer positioning," Genovese said. "We are also encouraged by the latest 5G time lines and capex budgets offered by major early mover carriers." The stock has gained 7.4% over the past three months through Thursday, while the iShares U.S. Telecommunications ETF has tacked on 1.6% and the S&P 500 has rallied 9.4%.Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move. UPDATE 1-Nokia tops quarterly expectations, buoyed by patent payment

HELSINKI, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Nokia posted better-than-expected quarterly profits on Thursday, boosted by a one-off patent payment from China's Huawei, but said its network business was set for another year of decline, despite promising North American sales. The mobile industry, dominated by Huawei, Nokia and Sweden's Ericsson, is weathering the toughest part of a decade-long cycle as demand for 4G gear falls, while spending on new, mass-market 5G networks are unlikely before 2019 or 2020.

BlackBerry 'disappointed' about ICC court ruling in Nokia dispute

BlackBerry Ltd. said Friday the International Chamber of Commerce's court of arbitration ruled against it in its contract dispute with Nokia Corp. . The dispute related to whether certain payments that Nokia alleged were owed to Nokia under a patent license contract between the companies. BlackBerry said the ICC's arbitration panel awarded Nokia $137 million, which it will record as a one-time charge to earnings. "BlackBerry is disappointed that the Court of Arbitration did not agree with our arguments in the case but we accept their decision," the cybersecurity software and handheld device maker said in a statement. BlackBerry said it would continue to pursue patent infringement claims against Nokia in suits filed in both Germany and the U.S. The stock was up 0.6% in morning trade.
